2.5 Dargo Windows App

The Dargo desktop app for Windows has its own scoped privacy notice at dargo.net/privacy-app — that page is the canonical description of what the app collects on your PC and what it transmits. The summary below covers the same behaviors so this policy stays complete.

Dargo is an optional Windows desktop application (available from the Microsoft Store) that turns a personal PC into a Dargo device without you needing to touch a command line. If you choose to install and run the app, please note:

What the app does on your PC. During setup, and only after you click through the wizard steps, the app will:

  • Enable Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL 2) and the Virtual Machine Platform feature if they are not already on. Windows may prompt for a restart.
  • Install a fresh copy of Ubuntu 24.04 inside WSL 2 (a self-contained Linux user-space; it does not affect the rest of your Windows installation).
  • Download the Dargo agent binary from install.dargo.net/binaries and place it under /opt/dargo inside the Ubuntu environment.
  • Register a Windows scheduled task (DargoBYOD_KeepAlive) that keeps the Ubuntu environment alive in the background so your device stays reachable while your PC is on.
  • Write a small configuration file to %USERPROFILE%\.wslconfig that disables WSL's idle shutdown.
  • Open a persistent outbound TLS connection from your PC to Dargo's tunnel server (lb.mydargo.com, port 7443).
  • Route inbound HTTP/HTTPS requests for the subdomains you choose (*.mydargo.com) through that outbound tunnel to the apps running on your PC — this is what makes your device publicly reachable.

What the app collects and transmits:

  • The install token you paste from the portal is exchanged once with install.dargo.net to fetch the credentials for the specific pre-provisioned device you just created.
  • Device identity + tunnel credentials (series number, tunnel ID, tunnel authentication token) are stored locally inside the Ubuntu environment at /opt/dargo/otac/config/config.json with restricted (0600) permissions. They are transmitted only to Dargo's tunnel server as part of the outbound connection above.
  • Tunnel liveness signals (whether your device is currently connected, when it was last seen, how many bytes have flowed through the tunnel this month) are recorded on our infrastructure and shown to you at my.dargo.net. This is used for billing where applicable and for the online/offline status indicator in the portal.
  • The app does not scan, index, or upload files from your Windows filesystem. It does not read from any folder outside its own installation directory and the Linux environment it manages.

What the app does NOT do:

  • It does not open any inbound network ports on your Windows firewall — all traffic reaches your device through the outbound tunnel Dargo maintains.
  • It does not send anonymous telemetry, usage analytics, or crash reports to Dargo. The only network traffic the app itself generates is the credentials exchange described above and the FRP tunnel connection.
  • It does not modify Windows system files outside the standard WSL feature enablement performed by Windows itself.

Uninstalling. The app's Uninstall action removes the dargo agent from the Ubuntu environment, releases your device's tunnel credentials on our infrastructure (so the device stops being reachable), and stops the keep-alive scheduled task. To also remove WSL 2, Ubuntu, or the .wslconfig file itself, follow Microsoft's standard uninstall path from Settings → Apps.
